It was another brutal night for the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, losing another game to the Atlanta Braves. While the Phillies lost each game of this three-game set, including a 3-1 loss on Saturday, what they did prior to these past two losses shows how bad things have really been in Philadelphia.
With the Phillies losing three consecutive games by six or more runs in the three games prior to that, dropping two of three to the Chicago Cubs, and then losing to the Braves in the first game of this set 9-0, it was the first time that happened since the 2018 campaign.
“The Phillies have lost three consecutive games by six or more runs for the first time since 2018. It’s the first time since 1989 (and only second time since 1947) that they’ve lost three straight at home by that margin. They have lost five of their first 19 games by six runs or more for the first time since 1986. It’s the first time they have allowed nine runs in three straight home games since 1973.
“The worst part for many of the 43,048 people in attendance Friday night was that their game ticket was also their concert ticket; they had to endure nine innings of Phillies baseball to see Jordan Davis perform afterward. Losing is one thing. Three straight uncompetitive games at Citizens Bank Park is another,” Matt Gelb wrote.
As tough as it is, there's something to be said about being competitive. Nobody expected the Phillies to go 162-0, and losing games is just an inevitable part of playing in Major League Baseball. Teams are going to get blown out at times — it simply happens in this game because other teams are too good for it not to happen on certain nights.
However, there's something to be said about how the Phillies are currently losing games. The organization isn't in a good spot regarding staying competitive, and even though they haven't been completely blown out in the past two games, it only adds more fuel to the fire because things still haven't gone as planned. They had historically bad losses earlier in the week, and instead of responding, they continued to struggle when it mattered most against a division opponent.
This marks the first time since 2018 that the Phillies have lost three consecutive games by such a margin, highlighting a significant decline in their performance.
The Phillies last allowed nine runs in three consecutive home games in 1973, indicating a long-standing issue with their home defense.
The Phillies have lost five of their first 19 games by six runs or more, a statistic not seen since 1986.
