Pierre Kalulu: Man United ramp up pursuit of Juventus defender

There is also a desire to strengthen the full-back positions, with a left-back considered an urgent priority to provide support to Luke Shaw, as Patrick Dorgu is expected to remain stationed further forward when the Dane returns from injury.

Signing a versatile defender with the ability to play centrally or on the flanks would enable the club to kill two birds with one smart transfer – which explains the growing interest in Kalulu.

Jack Of All Trades

The France international has been earning “rave reviews” for his performances in Serie A this season at the heart of Juventus’ defence.

The Serie A giant lines up with a back three system, similar to the structure Ruben Amorim unsuccessfully tried to implement at Old Trafford. Kalulu is most often deployed on the right side of this unit, but has also played as a wing-back in Turin.

The 26-year-old has extensive experience in a traditional back four at previous club AC Milan, while he started as a right-back for France in the most recent international break.

The Lyon native stands 6’0″, a slightly undersized frame for a typical centre-back, but possesses an excellent leap and anticipation when challenging aerially. He is also strong in duels and offers outstanding speed, capable of covering large spaces in transition.

United are long-term admirers, as are bitter rivals Liverpool, but the Red Devils look ready to accelerate their interest ahead of the summer window. Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web reports that United have placed Kalulu “in their sights for next season” and will dispatch scouts to watch him in action this weekend.

Juventus face his former side Milan tomorrow night in a crunch clash between the two rivals in the hunt for Champions League qualification. A win would lift Juve above I Rossoneri on goal difference, while a loss would create a six-point gap.

Aware of the growing interest from England, the Old Lady are intent on keeping Kalulu and are planning to offer a new contract to ward off his suitors. His current deal expires in 2029, meaning their negotiating position is strong even without this extension.
