The Pittsburgh Pirates weren't given a chance to win against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, as right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski struggled. The 27-year-old fought his way to get through five innings, as he was “fighting my body the whole game.”
Mlodzinski allowed six hits, five earned runs, walked two, and struck out six in 4.2 innings.
“It was just honestly an off night,” Mlodzinski said postgame to SportsNet Pittsburgh. “I was kind of fighting my body the whole game. Definitely grinded through it, you know, never gave up, in a sense, but just wasn't able to execute in that fifth inning when I really needed to give the team a chance to win. So just make an adjustment. And I think I've been around long enough to know you're going to struggle in this game and those games are going to happen. So you can't let it get to you too much, but you got to recognize what the adjustments need to be going into the next one.”
Mlodzinski was coming off two strong outings, one in which he was used as an opener for manager Don Kelly. As the Pirates' opener against the Washington Nationals, Mlodzinski went six innings, allowing two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.
In his five games (four starts) this season, Mlodzinski is 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA.

Working on his fastball command in his last bullpen session, leading to his success against the Nationals, Mlodzinski may need to do the same. Mlodzinski's next start will come against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 26, but that could change if manager Don Kelly decides to use an opener again.
