The 2026 season has been a rollercoaster ride for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
It started on a down note with the worst start of Paul Skenes' career on Opening Day, which was followed shortly thereafter by a five-game winning streak. The Pirates have played .500 baseball since then, going 16-16 over their last 32 games.
After alternating wins and losses for much of April, Pittsburgh ended the month on a five-game losing streak before starting May with five wins in six games.
The whiplash of the Pirates' season has occasionally been dizzying for their fans. Pittsburgh obviously has potential and looks like a playoff team on some days, only to turn around and inexplicably lose in frustrating fashion the next day.
Take the offense, which scored 26 runs in the Pirates' first two games of May, then scored just eight runs over the next five games combined. The defense and pitching have also been erratic at times.

Growing pains are to be expected for a young team like Pittsburgh, especially one with so many new players and a manager in his first full season. Many of them are still learning.
It's only May, so the Pirates still have plenty of time to work out the kinks and become a more polished baseball team. They won't have much margin for error, however, if the NL Central continues to be the toughest division in baseball.
