The Philadelphia 76ers eliminated the Boston Celtics with a 109-100 Game 7 victory, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit. Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 34 points, marking the first playoff series win over the Celtics since 1982.
BOSTON -- The Philadelphia 76ers invaded the TD Garden on Saturday night looking to complete an epic comeback. The Sixers trailed the Boston Celtics 3-1, but had found a way to rally and get back into this series. Now, they needed to throw the knockout punch with the Celtics missing Jayson Tatum due to a knee issue.
The Sixers got off to a great start, withstood a Celtics haymaker in the second quarter, and then regained control to eliminate Boston 109-100 with a Game 7 win. For the first time since 1982, the Sixers have eliminated the Celtics in a playoff series and they did so in dramatic fashion following the 3-1 deficit.
Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists, Tyrese Maxey had 30 points, seven assists, and 10 rebounds, and VJ Edgecombe had 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Paul George had 13 points on the night.
Here are the player grades following the win:
Once again, the Celtics just had zero answers for Maxey. Whenever he put his head down and decided to get into the paint, he did so with ease and he created opportunities for both himself and his teammates as he was effective with his own offense as well as with his passing. Either way, Boston couldnât slow him down. He really asserted himself in the third quarter when it looked like the Celtics were going to make another run at it. Maxey knocked down two huge 3s and was able to help Embiid restore order a bit on offense. There were plenty of moments when he was able to quiet the crowd a bit and give the Sixers the offense they needed in this one.
The 76ers won Game 7 by scoring 109 points to the Celtics' 100, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit.
Joel Embiid scored 34 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and provided six assists in the Game 7 win.
The Sixers last eliminated the Celtics in a playoff series in 1982.
Jayson Tatum's absence due to a knee issue likely weakened the Celtics' chances, contributing to their loss in Game 7.

It was a great start for Edgecombe as he continues to thrive in this building. He played fantastic defense on the perimeter and bodied up against Celtics star Jaylen Brown while also being effective on the offensive end. He was too quick for any of Bostonâs perimeter guys and was able to get to the basket and come up with some impressive finishes to keep the scoreboard moving for the Sixers. The amount of clutch shots he made off catch-and-shoot opportunities was huge as he put his stamp on this one in a number of different ways. Another feather in the cap for this impressive young rookie in his first Game 7 on the road.
Outside of some head-scratching turnovers, George was good in this one. He was efficient with his offense as he got to his spots out on the floor and was able to calm the Sixers down at times with his ability to knock down a big shot. There were times when the Celtics tried to climb into this one, but George then knocked down a big shot to quiet the crowd. He had a tough second half offensively, but he battled his behind off on the defensive end.
The 11-year veteran out of Kansas provided a great impact on both ends. He was all over the place defensively as he caused a lot of problems with his length and defensive acumen. He also cut inside for a couple of dunks which helped the offense when the Celtics sent doubles to Embiid and Maxey. There were some overall struggles as he got into some foul trouble, but Oubre did a lot of the little things in this one.
The big fella knew an efficient night was coming, and it happened at the absolute best time for Philadelphia. He was terrific in the two-man game with Maxey as he did a great job of showing off his touch on the offensive end. He was also fantastic as a passer whenever Boston doubled. He was running the offense from the post and he was terrific in many other ways in this one. When the Celtics found a rhythm in the second quarter, he came up with some big buckets to restore order a bit. He made life miserable for Boston big men Luka Garza and Neemias Queta all night long. He made some huge plays in the fourth to keep the Celtics at bay and was just overall phenomenal on both ends. He laid it all out on the line in this one.
The Sixers needed some energy off their bench and Grimes gave it to them. He was all over the place on the defensive end and had some good moments on offense to help the Sixers find success. He was so helpful on the glass and made plays with his passing to help Philadelphia and find a way to contribute on the floor.
The overall night for Drummond was a tough one. He was able to grab a rebound, but he had trouble with Celtics big man Neemias Queta as he was unable to keep up with him in the paint.
Edwards didnât produce much in his initial stint as he missed a bucket in the paint, but he did make some plays on the defensive end, so the Sixers will take that.
When Oubre got into foul trouble, the Sixers turned to Barlow off the bench and he had some good defensive moments against this Celtics team to force a miss here and there.
