Penske Porsche Motorsports has been a force to be reckoned with since its launch in 2023, winning championships and major races in both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship before its European racing efforts were dropped this season. Almost all of that was accomplished in the same red and white livery, but the team finally began to deviate with a special livery at Sebring this year. That was followed by another special scheme for Long Beach, and it looks like the PPM team has something even more special lined up for the weekend's race at Laguna Seca.
In an Instagram teaser shared to both Porsche's main and motorsport accounts on Wednesday, a helmet can be seen adorned in retro Apple Computer colors famously seen on a 1980 IMSA racer. The video mentions a track, Laguna Seca, and a date, this Sunday. Since the upcoming IMSA race at Laguna Seca has been deemed a "throwback weekend," it seems safe to assume that the PPM-run 963s will wear the famous Apple colors in that race.

The livery assumed to be returning this time around is from a 935 that ran in the 1980 season, an iconic rainbow-clad car from before Apple's aversion to conventional advertising outside of its brand guidelines was formed. It was a late and relatively unsuccessful run for the 911-adjacent GT racing legend, so that particular car has since been re-wrapped in the colors it wore when Paul Newman drove it to a class win and second overall finish at Le Mans in 1979.
The retro Apple livery is significant as it pays homage to a classic 1980 IMSA racer, enhancing the nostalgic appeal during the throwback weekend at Laguna Seca.

Its presumed return comes just two weeks after a more modern Apple livery ran in the previous IMSA round. That design, which advertised Apple Music, was a very different look that did not have any connection to the more famous Apple-Porsche racing partnership. In retrospect, it appears to have been part of a two-race deal that also included this throwback design.
IMSA's Laguna Seca round is just days away and practice begins on Friday. That should mean a full throwback livery reveal should follow in the coming days, possibly even on Thursday.
