The draw for the upcoming Preakness Stakes was announced on Monday for the second leg of thoroughbred racingās Triple Crown.
Iron Honor, (9th position) opened as a slight favorite at 9-to-2. Taj Mahal (1st), Chip Honcho (6th) and Incrdibolt (12th) werenāt far behind at 5-to-1.
As previously announced, the field does not include Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo. Golden Tempoās trainer Cherie DeVaux cited Golden Tempoās health last week in announcing the decision to bypass the Preakness Stakes, which will take place on Saturday, two weeks after the running of the Kentucky Derby.
āGolden gave us the race of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby, and we believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time following such a tremendous effort,ā DeVaux wrote. āHis health, happiness and long-term future will always remain our top priority.ā
DeVaux does plan to run Golden Tempo at the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown. The Belmont is schedule to take place on June 6, giving Golden Tempo roughly a month off between races.
As for the 14 horses that will run at whatās considered a wide-open Preakness Stakes, hereās the starting order and the opening odds for Saturdayās race that scheduled to post at 7:01 p.m. ET:
Iron Honor is the slight favorite at 9-to-2, followed by Taj Mahal, Chip Honcho, and Incrdibolt at 5-to-1.
Golden Tempo, the Kentucky Derby winner, will not be competing in the Preakness Stakes this year.
Iron Honor drew the 9th position, while Taj Mahal is in the 1st, Chip Honcho in the 6th, and Incrdibolt in the 12th position.
