Upset special?
Former UFC womenâs bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey opened as the -700 betting favorite over ex-Strikeforce attraction Gina Carano ahead of their MVP main event on Netflix this Sat. night (May 16, 2026) at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. But that doesnât mean âRowdyâ is guaranteed to emerge the winner.
UFC welterweight veteran Matt Brown is picking âConvictionâ for the upset.
âI think itâs going to be an ugly fight for the most part,â Brown told MMA Fighting. âHereâs why Iâm going to go with Gina Carano â I think Ginaâs naturally a little bit bigger than Ronda. I think during this down time, I donât know either of them personally, but Iâm going to assume just from the personalities that I know online and the media, that Carano probably attempted at least to stay in better shape. Where Ronda I think just quit training all together and was just out and now sheâs coming back.â
Rousey claims it was the other way around.
Ronda Rousey opened as a -700 betting favorite against Gina Carano for their upcoming fight.
The fight is scheduled for May 16, 2026, at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.
Ronda Rousey is favored to win, but some experts, including Matt Brown, predict Gina Carano could cause an upset.

âLastly, Ronda is a lot more predictable,â Brown added. âFor one thing, she doesnât go and shoot double legs. Itâs going to be a judo style takedown, which is a little bit more predictable. Sheâs got to get in the clinch and try to attempt to throw. If Gina does some of the basic things, she should be able to mitigate that. With that said, it will probably be ugly as hell. Ugly as all hell. Itâs going to be nothing to write home about. Iâm going to go Carano and plus Iâm a bigger fan of Carano, too, so maybe a little bit of bias there too.â
Sounds like God is a bigger fan of Carano, too.
âThe thing is everything Ronda does can be mitigated pretty easily,â Brown said. âI shouldnât say easily but you can learn pretty quickly how to not get armbarred. You can learn pretty quickly how to not get judo tossed. Holly Holm wrote the blueprint on it. I donât think Ronda got a single takedown on her. Because judo is a specific sport where youâre wearing a gi and youâve got the grips and youâre doing certain things with that. Where itâs transferred over to no-gi or MMA, itâs limited. Not that itâs not great for that, I love judo, I think itâs an amazing sport but only certain moves carry over. Itâs a very limited amount of moves.â
That may explain how this 2022 upset happened.
âSo Gina has a limited amount of things she has to train for against Ronda whereas Ronda has to train to get her striking better and she was training that for a long time and it never got better,âBrown added. âI donât think she has the natural intuitiveness to be a striker ever. That combined with the size and just guessing Ginaâs probably more inclined to stay in shape over 17 years.â
Rousey, 39, walked away from cage fighting in late 2016 after suffering back-to-back knockout losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. As for Carano, 44, she called it quits following her technical knockout defeat to Cris Cyborg under the now-defunct Strikeforce banner in summer 2009.
