May 9—Hartselle's hunt for another state baseball championship is still alive, as the Tigers picked up a 2-1 victory over Pell City in the opening round of a Class 6A quarterfinal series on Friday.
A final score for Game 2 of the best-of-3 series, which Hartselle was leading late, was not available at The Daily's deadline.
The winner of the series between Hartselle and Pell City will advance to face Hazel Green in next week's semifinals. Hazel Green defeated No.1 Homewood in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal round was not as good to other area teams, with East Limestone (5A) and Athens Bible School (1A) suffering season-ending sweeps on Friday.

Hartselle 2, Pell City 1: Hartselle's postseason trend of rallying for late wins continued in the opener, as the Tigers scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a win.
Carter Lee singled home a run to tie the game 1-1 before a Sam Gillette sacrifice fly gave the Tigers the lead. Lee finished with a pair of hits, while Asher Doepel added two singles.
Doepel got the win in relief, tossing two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Barrett McKelvey got the start and worked five innings for the Tigers, allowing one earned run on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

American Christian Academy 6, East Limestone 5: Landon Compton homered and drove in a pair of runs for East Limestone in the opener.
The Indians led 3-1 after five innings before American Christian scored four times in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. East Limestone rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, but American Christian scored once more in the top of the seventh and held on for the win.
Coleby Davis had a single and two RBIs for the Indians, while Alex Adkins added a solo homer.

Elmore finished with a pair of home runs and four RBIs for American Christian, which hit five homers as a team.
Davis, Brantly Stinson and Josh Thallas had one hit each for East Limestone.

Ethan Barnes had a pair of singles and two RBIs for the Trojans, who outhit Hubbertville 10-9 in the loss.

Barnes singled and drove in one run for the Trojans and Murrell pitched six innings, striking out 10.
