Previewing Shawnee County's chances in KSHSAA boys tennis State Championship
TOPEKA — The first high school state championship begins this weekend. The boys tennis state tournament will begin on Friday, May 15. The two-state championship will feature many Shawnee County competitors with hopes of a deep tournament run.
Washburn Rural's greatest strength is its depth. It will be on display at the Class 6A State Championship as the team tries to win its first state title since 2007.
The Junior Blues last reached the podium in 2016 when they took third. This year, the consistency on the court has been excellent. Washburn Rural has won the Topeka City Championship, the Centennial League and the Regional Championship this season.

The Junior Blues’ doubles teams are elite. Dylan Willingham and Cale Deutscher have been a great pair and are coming off a regional title and city title this season. Last year, Willingham and Deutscher took seventh in Class 6A. Ben Tryhus and Kieffer O’Connor will compete at the state tournament, as they also earned the No. 2 doubles title in the city.
In singles, Greyson Jones finished in fourth-place in regionals. He owns a 22-11 record as he also finished in third-place in the city tournament.
Tres Lassiter will represent Topeka High on the singles side of play in Class 6A. The senior was runner-up in the regional tournament along with the Topeka City Championship this season. Lassiter holds a 28-9 record this season and has state tournament experience. He reached the final tournament last season after winning the city title in singles.
On the doubles side, Christian Sink and Victor Arriaga will feature after taking fifth-place at regionals. Last season, Sink took 12th place playing with Alex Raymond, who graduated last season, in doubles.
For the second consecutive season, Seaman has qualified a full six-player team to the Class 5A State Tournament. Camden Dutton and Kenton Myrick will be playing singles. Dutton took second in regionals and holds an 18-11 record. Myrick finished third in regionals with his 22-7 record.
The KSHSAA boys tennis State Championship begins on Friday, May 15.

On the doubles side, Seaman’s Dayton Schneider and Owen Stewart are coming off a third-place regional showing. Aaron Sampson and Cooper Hopeck also took fourth last week.
Topeka West's Collin McGee and Zander Rice will represent the Chargers in doubles. McGee returns to the state tournament after qualifying last season. This is McGee and Rice’s first season playing together. The duo took second-place in the regional championship and the city tournament.
Hayden qualified five players for the Class 4A State Championship, which will be played at Kossover Tennis Center.
Brek Wahlmeier will play singles with his 19-15 record. He is peaking at the right moment after taking third-place in regionals.
Hayden will have two doubles teams feature in the state tournament. William Luke and Bock Reynoldson earned second in regionals. The pair finished in sixth place in the city championship a few weeks ago. Hayden's Patrick Luke and Miles Allphin will also play after taking fifth in regionals.
Cair Paravel’s Drew Fay will conclude his high school tennis career this weekend at the Class 3-1A State Championship. The senior has put the Lions on the map in his four years of playing tennis.
This season, Fay won the regional championship and the city title. He currently holds a 26-2 record this season with hopes of another deep state tournament run. Fay earned second-place in doubles last season, but he will play singles this weekend.
Jonah Arnold will also feature for the Lions. He finished in fourth-place in regionals as he has a 22-7 record. Joey Thoennes and David Toenjes will play doubles for Cair Paravel, too.
