William’s decision to back Aston Villa has long been viewed by many as unusual, especially given the number of bigger and more successful clubs he could have chosen to follow.

The prince previously explained the reasoning behind his choice during a 2015 interview with the BBC. At the time, he revealed that he began supporting Villa during his school days because he wanted the emotional experience that came with backing a club outside the usual dominant sides.

“A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans, and I didn’t want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams,” William said.

“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments,” he added.

Beyond seeking the emotional highs and lows that come with supporting a football club, William’s decision to follow Aston Villa is also tied to the club’s rich history in English football.

The prince once reflected on Villa’s FA Cup clash against Bolton Wanderers in 2000.

Although his team eventually lost that year’s final to Chelsea, William said the experience left a lasting impression on him because of the atmosphere created by the supporters, as well as the sense of unity and connection he felt during the occasion.

“It was fantastic. I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was sat with all the Brummie fans and had a great time,” he said.

“It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie, and I really felt that there was something I could connect with,” William added.

At times, William’s support for his boyhood club has extended beyond simply cheering from the stands. According to former Villa forward John Carew, part of the reason he completed his move to the club in 2007 was because of encouragement from the Prince of Wales after the pair first met in Norway.

“He convinced me to move there in 2007. For three consecutive seasons, I scored double figures in the Premier League,” Carew told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He admired me. In 2019, we watched the play-off final against Derby County together at Wembley, which secured our return to the Premier League,” he added.
