The Baltimore Orioles are taking advantage of a chaotic AL East, with a record of 8-7 and first place in the division. However, as itâs pretty evident their roster is pretty shaky as well, they need to make some early upgrades to keep their position.
Sports Illustratedâs Ryan Shea proposes that one upgrade the Oâs can make right now is to their starting pitching, and make a deal with the Athletics for their breakout pitcher, Jeffrey Springs. Springs could be another steal like Trevor Rogers, and make for one of the more underrated 1-2 punches in the MLB.
The trade would look like this:
Orioles get: LHP Jeffrey Springs
Athletics get: INF Coby Mayo, RHP Chayce McDermott
âThe Orioles would make this trade because they are in win-now mode, focused on getting back to the playoffs and trying to top the AL East, where the division race is usually tight and every rotation upgrade matters. By acquiring Jeffrey Springs, they add a reliable, steady starter who immediately strengthens their rotation and gives them more confidence in important division matchups and late-season games. He fits the profile of a pitcher who can stabilize a staff and help a contender shorten games and win more consistently,â Shea wrote.
So far this season, Springs has posted a 2-0 record, a 1.47 ERA, 15 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.764 in 18 innings pitched. He would be the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation, and give the Oâs the consistent 1-2 punch they need.
Another thing about Springs is that he's also quite affordable. Heâs on the last year of his four-year, $31 million deal, but he has a club option for $15 million next season, and if he continues on his current trend, the Oâs would definitely exercise that.
Hopefully, the Oâs realize this a trade they need to make, and get on the phone immediately to hammer out the details.
