BROOKLYNâFederal prosecutors plan to seek additional charges against Terry Rozier in the coming weeks, they said on Monday, as part of the gambling probe that has also involved other NBA players and coaches.
Rozier was in Brooklyn federal court for a hearing over the motion his legal team filed to dismiss the current case against him, which includes conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. He has already pleaded not guilty to those charges.
Prosecutors said they have developed evidence that suggests Rozier âsolicited and accepted a bribe.â During the hearing, Rozierâs attorney, Jim Trusty, said they learned two hours before the 3:30 p.m. hearing that the government planned to file additional charges. Prosecutors said they notified Trusty when they did because they didnât want the defense to learn of them in the middle of the hearing.
The new charges will first be presented to a grand jury before they can be part of a superseding indictment. Prosecutors told Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall on Monday that they anticipate the additional charges to be added by May 14. The prosecutors say they will seek a count of sports bribery and honest services fraud. A government attorney said Rozier deprived âthe NBA and the Charlotte Hornets of Mr. Rozierâs honest services.â
Rozier is facing two current charges from his October 2025 arrest and an indictment that alleges he told a friend, Deniro Laster, that he would leave a March 2023 game while he was playing for the Hornets. Prosecutors say Laster sold that information to sports bettors, who then placed wagers on Rozierâs playing time.
The 32-year-old was traded to the Heat the next season. Miami waived Rozier earlier this month to make a roster spot available for the play-in tournament.
Rozier has been on leave since his arrest, but in February an arbitrator ruled that he still has to receive the $26.4 million he was owed by the Heat this season.
No ruling was made on Rozierâs motion to dismiss the charges against him. Judge Hall told Trusty she will wait for the government to seek its additional charges so Trusty can adjust his current motion after theyâre filed if he wants to.
âWe will give a hard look at the superseding indictment,â Trusty told reporters outside the courthouse on Monday.
