£100m 'question mark' may concern Liverpool in chase for midfield targets

Liverpool have a lot of change coming their way in the summer transfer window.

Two members of their first-team squad are already guaranteed to be leaving which means that some massive voids will need to be filled.

The futures of other players such as Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones also remain in the balance with nobody exactly sure what Liverpool's team will look like next term.

But, it's been made more than clear this season that some new arrivals are needed, especially if they want to be competing for the Premier League and Champions League titles.

And, since the summer transfer window is now just around the corner, Liverpool need to figure out their priorities and whether it's worth spending big one one player or signing two or three less expensive players instead.

Liverpool may no longer be going for Elliott Anderson or Adam Wharton

Elliott Anderson and Adam Wharton have both been linked with Anfield switches this season.

The duo are two of England's most sought-after midfielders with both of them managing to prove their worth in more ways than one.

Wharton is the one who has been the most long-linked with a transfer and, when it seemed like Nottingham Forest were going to be relegated, Anderson's name also popped up as a potential target.

However, journalist Bence Bocsak has claimed that there's still a "question mark" surrounding the potential transfer of either player.

"I think the big sort of question mark for me is the price tag,” he said on the Anfield Watch Podcast.

“[Elliott] Anderson and [Adam] Wharton are probably going to cost you around £100 million or even more potentially for Wharton.

“I don’t know, it just looks like they’ll be a hefty price tag on both of them and Liverpool spent a lot of money last summer.”

Last summer was the highest amount of spending that Liverpool had ever undergone.

They were coming off the back of a Premier League winning season with many thinking that their new additions of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak would make them one of the best teams in the world.

However, since neither of them have managed to meet expectations, it begs the question of whether it's even worth Liverpool spending another £100 million+ on one player.

There are several areas among Arne Slot's ranks that could do with upgrading and, since the Reds don't have as many sellable assets as they did last term, raising a similar amount of money this summer could prove difficult.

Many players have already been linked with an Anfield switch this summer and, even though Liverpool's midfield could do with an upgrade or two, it is still their most stacked area at the moment.

So, with this in mind, it seems like it would be rather silly for Slot and Richard Hughes to fork out over £100 million for one player, especially if they're a central midfielder.
