Real Madrid's elimination in the Champions League quarterfinals brought sorrow to their supporters, but joy to those of PSG. On social media, a short phrase by Kylian Mbappe caused a sensation.
Time flies in football, but some Parisian supporters still hold a terrible grudge against Mbappe, 27, for the manner in which he left Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.
So, noting that he has not won any major title since signing with Real Madrid, and especially no Champions League, an internet user dug up an excerpt from the famous interview of the French forward conducted by Mouloud Achour for the show Clique TV, on Canal+, which aired in December 2024.
That night, the encrypted channel had attracted a huge audience for what was Mbappe's first major television interview since his signing in Madrid. The journalist had asked the 2018 world champion a question: "Do you think PSG has a chance of winning the Champions League one day." The answer has Parisian fans rejoicing.
With a smile, Mbappe had responded immediately. "For now, I don't hope so because I want to win it with Madrid, and there aren't two trophies. But in the future, I hope that one day they will win because the supporters, the people who suffer there daily, they deserve a bit of happiness all the same. But not now, because I need to win a little," the Bondy native said then.
A little more than two years later, Paris Saint-Germain won a Champions League a few months after Mbappe's remarks and remains in contention for a back-to-back that few believed possible just a few weeks ago.
A clip viewed nearly 200,000 times on X (formerly Twitter) since Real Madrid's elimination, and which has once again sparked plenty of negative comments directed at Mbappe.
