Purdue basketball takes on road challenges as Big Ten announces pairings
Purdue menās basketball knows not to assume anything based on the home and away distribution of their Big Ten Conference games.
Last season, the Boilermakers appeared to catch a break when contenders Illinois, Michigan and Michigan State all came to Mackey Arena for their lone games. That advantage disappeared when all three won on Keady Court.
Per the home-away pairings announced Tuesday, the road to a conference championship appears to be even tougher this season. Dates, times and television assignments will be announced later.
Time will tell if another remade roster will elevate Indiana back to the top of the Big Ten standings. Last season reinforced how little that matters in this rivalry. Darian DeVries won his first game in the series in Bloomington.

Purdueās other two double-plays also carry recent rivalry implications.
Illinoisā 88-82 victory at Mackey Arena last season will endure as one of the most memorable victories of that teamās Final Four season. Keaton Wagler, who scored 46 points in that game, is off to the NBA. But Andrej Stojakovic, David Mirkovic and Tomislav Ivisic all return.
Rutgers has dropped off since its memorable battles with the Boilermakers during the Zach Edey era. Leading scorer and honorable mention All-Big Ten pick Tariq Francis returns.
Purdueās only games against two of the Big Tenās biggest surprises last season come at Mackey Arena. Iowa and Nebraska met in the Sweet Sixteen and are positioned to maintain that success.
The Cornhuskers return first team All-Big Ten pick Pryce Sandfort and Sixth Man of the Year Braden Frager. They also brought in a trio of transfers who all averaged double-figure scoring last season.
Iowa must reload after Bennett Stirtzās departure. Starters Cooper Koch and Cam Manyawu return, as does key reserve Tate Sage. Tavion Banks continues to pursue a fifth year of eligibility with the NCAA. The Hawkeyes also added 7-foot-3 center Andrew McKeever, who transferred from Saint Mary's.
The home slate also includes two other teams positioning themselves to move back into the upper tier of the conference: UCLA and Ohio State. The Bruins no longer have Donovan Dent or Tyler Bilodeau, two players who gave Purdue problems last season. Cathedralās Xavier Booker leads the returnees, and six transfers or freshmen enter the mix.
National top-10 prospect Anthony Thompson is expected to make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes. Honorable mention All-Big Ten selection John Mobley Jr. also returns.
Maryland, Northwestern and USC ā three programs who finished in the Big Tenās bottom six last season ā round out the home-only opponents.
In the reversal of last seasonās schedule dynamic, the only time Purdue plays Michigan, Michigan State or Wisconsin will be on those teamsā home floors.
The defending national champion Wolverines should again contend at the top of the conference. Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKinney return, and top-20 freshman Brandon McCoy and transfer frontcourt help bolster the roster.
Spartans point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. is already one of the nationās best at the position. Coen Carr and 7-0 Charlotte transfer Anton Bonke headline the frontcourt.
The Badgers took a big hit when John Blackwell transferred to Duke. Greg Gard also went to the portal to improve his roster, adding Miami Ohioās Eian Elmer, Hofstraās Victory Onuetu and George Washingtonās Trey Autry.
The remainder of the road schedule winds through the recent bottom of the Big Ten standings. Minnesota did improve to 8-12 in the league under first-year coach Niko Medved. He added four power conference transfers who could all be rotation players next season.
The Boilersā West Coast swing takes them to Oregon and Washington ā two teams who combined for 12 Big Ten victories last season. Penn State finished last, however, the Nittany Lions easily won the teamsā last meeting in State College two years ago.
Home/away: Illinois, Indiana, Rutgers
Home only: Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, UCLA, USC
Away only: Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Oregon, Penn State, Washington, Wisconsin
