The Minnesota Wild saw their NHL playoff run end in painful fashion, but defenseman Quinn Hughes has eased concerns about his long-term future with the organization.
Following Minnesotaâs second-round elimination against the Colorado Avalanche, Hughes openly discussed his interest in staying with the Wild beyond his current contract. Speaking after the season-ending loss, the star defenseman made it clear he believes the franchise is moving in the right direction.
According to The Athleticâs Joe Smith, Hughes said, âIâm definitely open to re-signing here.â
The 26-year-old expanded further on why Minnesota has become an appealing fit.
âI really like it here. I love the team,â Hughes said. âI love the city and the fans. Being in that lockerooom, itâs a special group. I would definitely be open to re-signing here with the guys that we have.â
Hughes also praised General Manager Bill Guerin and head coach John Hynes while discussing the trust he has in the organization.
âThereâs a lot of trust with Billy as well,â Hughes said. âLove Hynesy plus Cappy and the coaching staff. I think itâs a great spot, great situation for me.â

Minnesotaâs playoff exit exposed areas that need improvement. The Wild blew a 3-0 lead in Game 5 before losing in overtime as Colorado eliminated them in five games. Their penalty kill struggled badly throughout the series, while the team lacked enough defensive strength.
Still, this season marked meaningful progress for a franchise that had not won a playoff series since 2015.
That progress matters in Hughesâ decision-making. He specifically mentioned his confidence in Guerinâs ability to build a championship contender. Hughes also noted that while completing an extension this summer would be ideal, he is comfortable entering a contract year without immediate resolution.

Financially, Minnesota appears positioned to make a long-term deal work. The organization finally gains major cap flexibility after years of heavy buyout penalties tied to Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. With those dead-cap charges dropping sharply, the Wild project more than $13 million in cap space entering 2026-27.
