The Los Angeles Rams could lose out on another top option at backup quarterback. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, free-agent QB Jimmy Garoppolo is considering retirement.
He’s played 12 years in the league and made more than $156 million, and is now weighing whether he wants to continue playing at the age of 34. Garoppolo has been the Rams’ backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford for the last two years.
He remains a free agent despite the Rams having clear interest in bringing him back, with Sean McVay saying as much publicly in the last month or so.
In two seasons with the Rams, Garoppolo has appeared in just four games and made one start, which came in Week 18 of the 2024 campaign. In that game, he threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns with only one interception, coming up just short in the season finale against the Seahawks.
He didn't attempt a single pass last season, only entering the game to kneel the ball down in place of Stafford.
Garoppolo came into the NFL as a second-round pick out of Eastern Illinois, landing as Tom Brady's backup in New England. After three years there, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he led them to one Super Bowl and two NFC title games.
