The Los Angeles Rams will receive an extra day of rest after their season opener in Australia, as they host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 2. This scheduling break provides a crucial recovery period following their long trip back home.
After the Los Angeles Rams face the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener in Australia, they’ll have to make the long 16-hour trek back home to Southern California. The time difference between Melbourne and L.A. is a jarring 17 hours and will require an adjustment period, but the NFL is helping the Rams out with a scheduling break.
According to multiple reports, the Rams will host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 2. That gives Los Angeles an extra day of rest before its game after the opener in Australia, which is a nice perk.
Considering the NFL ended its Monday Night Football doubleheaders this year, the 49ers will presumably not get the same amount of rest as the Rams after they return from Australia. They’ll likely have to play on Sunday.
Playing on Monday night in Week 2 was always a logical scenario for the Rams, but there was no way for the NFL to give Los Angeles and the 49ers the same amount of rest after their Australia matchup. The Rams lucked out and are the ones getting the extra day of R&R before Week 2.
Of course, the downside is that the Rams will lose a day of rest before their Week 3 game, but they'll gladly take the added time after returning from Australia. It's also beneficial that Los Angeles is at home in the second week of the season, avoiding the need to hit the road two weeks in a row.
