The Los Angeles Rams met with Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu ahead of the draft, although details about the meeting remain unclear. Lomu is projected to be a first-round pick, likely in the latter half of Round 1.
This time of year, it’s hard to tell what’s truthful and what’s a smokescreen when it comes to draft reports. The Los Angeles Rams haven’t been directly linked to many players but on Wednesday, two offensive tackle prospects were connected to the Rams.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu “spent time with” the Rams, among other teams, leading up to the draft. It’s unclear how in-depth that time was, especially considering the Rams don’t typically host prospects on official pre-draft visits.
Lomu is projected to be a first-round pick, though he’s more likely to go in the second half of Round 1 than the first. He could be someone the Rams trade back and target later in the first round, though.
The Rams are in great shape at offensive tackle with Alaric Jackson and Warren McClendon Jr., but McClendon will be a free agent after the season and Los Angeles doesn't have a good swing tackle behind them.
Lomu would provide depth at either tackle spot, while also providing some leverage in contract negotiations with McClendon this offseason or next.
