The Texas Rangers returned to Globe Life Field on Friday night to open a three-game series against the red-hot Chicago Cubs.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, their struggles on the back end of their most recent road trip followed them home as they fell 7-1.
The Rangers managed just two hits in the game, one of which was an RBI single off the bat of Justin Foscue in the fifth inning to produce their lone run. Two hits mark a season low for the Rangers and their lowest total since June 6th of last season.
Kumar Rocker got the start for the Rangers and finished with a final line of 3 and 2/3 innings pitched, three earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts.
After allowing an RBI single in the first inning, Rocker settled in and managed to get the Rangers through the first three innings trailing by just one.
In the fourth, Rocker allowed a two-run home run off the bat of Seiya Suzuki before he exited the game later that frame.
“Those 1-2 and 0-2 counts, changing things, speeding things up, trying to make a perfect pitch, little things like that need to get cleaned up, not letting those innings get away from me, when you have the batters just finishing them,” Rocker said after the game.
With Cal Quantrill in the game in the seventh, the Cubs broke the game open with a bases-clearing three-run double off the bat of Michael Busch.
However, the Rangers' offensive struggles will certainly stand out from this one rather than the seven runs allowed.
“It’s tough, we didn’t hit a ton of balls hard tonight,” Rangers manager Skip Schuamker said. “Up and down the lineup, we just couldn't really string anything together. Some quick innings early on as well, so I think some of it may be attributed to some long innings on the defensive side for the first couple, but after that we just couldn’t string anything together…”
