The Baltimore Ravens may be rediscovering their roots

The most fascinating part of this transformation is how familiar it feels. For years, Baltimore built its reputation around physical intimidation, trench dominance, and forcing opponents into exhausting four-quarter fights. Somewhere along the way, pieces of that identity softened. Now, it feels like the franchise is leaning back into its DNA. Yes, Lamar Jackson remains the offense's superpower. Yes, explosiveness still matters, but this offseason increasingly feels like Baltimore looked in the mirror and decided elegance was overrated.

If "imposing" truly becomes this team's defining trait, AFC opponents may spend much of 2026 wishing CBS Sports had chosen a less accurate word. Even the roster's quieter additions follow the same theme. There's a deliberate identity forming here. Jesse Minter's Ravens don't appear interested in becoming the league's flashiest finesse team. They seem intent on becoming deeply unpleasant to play against for 60 minutes.

And frankly, that sounds very Ravens. If Baltimore truly is rediscovering its old identity, the rest of the AFC North may be in for a very long season. There doesn't appear to be any interest in winning beauty contests this fall. This team seems far more focused on reminding everyone how miserable four quarters against Baltimore football can be.
