Before the 2026 season started, many analysts projected the Tampa Bay Rays to finish dead last in the AL East.
Throughout the years, the Rays have proven time and time again that no matter how low their payroll is, they'll always be competitive. That's proving to be the case this year.
Tampa Bay sits just 1.5 games behind the New York Yankees in the standings, creating some distance between itself and the rest of the pack. Naturally, this could make them surprise buyers at the trade deadline.
FanSided's Chris Landers tabbed the Rays as a potential landing spot for a three-time batting champion from the San Francisco Giants.
"Seemingly nothing has gone right for the Giants so far this year, but [Luis] Arraez has quietly been a pleasant surprise — not for his offense but for his ability to hold his own defensively at second base," Landers wrote. "That broadens his appeal around the league, and the Rays could use some infield help as they hope to capitalize on the topsy-turvy nature of the AL East to date."
The Rays are performing better than expected, currently just 1.5 games behind the Yankees, which may prompt them to seek trades to strengthen their roster.
Analysts projected the Rays to finish dead last in the AL East due to their low payroll.
Despite low payroll expectations, the Rays are competing well and are positioned closely behind the Yankees in the standings.

Arraez fits the mold of Tampa Bay's offense. He is the best bat-to-ball hitter in baseball, despite lacking power and speed.
In 144 trips to the plate, Arraez has an identical amount of strikeouts (6) as walks.
"Tampa is drastically outperforming its underlying indicators right now, but they're leaning on small ball to get it done, and this version of Arraez fits that description to a T," Landers added.
Imagine a Tampa Bay lineup that includes Arraez atop the batting order? Speedsters Chandler Simpson and Taylor Walls would score more runs than they already do.
Not to mention, slugger Junior Caminero would have more opportunities to drive in runners.
A trade for Arraez, who is on a one-year deal with a struggling Giants team, could be just what the Rays need to remain in contention.
