The Carolina Panthers have never selected an interior offensive lineman, tight end, or safety in the first round of the NFL Draft since 1995. As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, fans are hoping for a change, particularly favoring Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman.

Since their first NFL Draft in 1995, the Carolina Panthers have used their first round picks on almost every position in football. Some of the exceptions are obvious. The list of first round punters and kickers consists of one name, K Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders. Of the positions that have a first round draft history, Carolina has never taken an interior offensive lineman, a tight end, or a safety. Now, a safety and a tight end are topping fansā wishlists for the 2026 NFL Draft.
Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman is intriguing because he provides both a scheme upgrade and draft value at 19. Itās obvious why folks want him in Charlotte. However, the Panthers have spent three years showing us what defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero values in safeties and rangy free safeties are not that. Calibrating our enthusiasm here may be wise.
Similarly, a big, athletic weapon like Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq could be just the help Bryce Young needs heading into what is effectively a contract year. That said, tight end has never been a position emphasized in head coach Dave Canalesā offenses. Investing a first round pick in a tight end would be a huge departure from his (brief) history.
The Panthers are in a fantastic position of not absolutely needing an upgrade at any one position. Their draft pick, however, may not align ābest player availableā from our perspective with how the Panthers value each position.
