Real Madrid will once again need to enter the transfer market to strengthen their central defence in the summer.
The club spent âŹ58 million on Dean Huijsen last year, but his inconsistent performances, the imminent departure of David Alaba and the injury problems affecting Eder Militao mean that further reinforcements are required.
Now, according to Sportske Novosti in Croatia, one name has emerged as a potential target for Real Madrid â Josko Gvardiol of Manchester City.
The defender continues to be a long-standing target for Los Blancos. As per the report, the club have been following the Croatian international for years now and their interest did not wane even after his move to Manchester City.
As per the outlet, Real Madrid legend Luka Modric, during his time at the club, had personally recommended his compatriot to president Florentino Perez.
However, In reality, a transfer for the Croatian defender appears highly unlikely. He is under contract with Manchester City until 2028 and is reportedly close to extending his deal until 2033.

The new deal would see Gvardiol get a significant increase in his salary to continue at the Etihad Stadium.
Only if Real Madrid were able to prevent that renewal would they have a chance to enter negotiations, although reports in England suggest the extension is already at an advanced stage.
However, the aforementioned Croatian outlet suggests that it is not true that the deal is that close and that it will be a mere formality.
But one must also consider the fact that, Gvardiol has been sidelined since January after suffering a fractured tibia in his right leg. The Croatian underwent surgery following the injury and has not yet returned to action.
His participation in the World Cup with Croatia is also uncertain, as his recovery timeline remains unclear. As a result, Gvardiolâs name does not appear to be a realistic option for Real Madrid.
