Real Madrid legend addresses comeback talk: ‘It’s too late now’

The spotlight was always going to find Toni Kroos, especially with tensions continuing to surround Real Madrid.

With speculation growing about a possible return to help stabilise the dressing room, the story almost built itself before he even spoke, but Kroos had no intention of playing along.

Appearing at the Laureus World Sports Awards, where he was honoured with the Inspiration Award in recognition of his career, the former midfielder made it clear early on that he was not there to entertain rumours.

When questions quickly turned towards Real Madrid, his patience wore thin.

“I’m not going to answer any more questions if they’re about Real Madrid,” he said, visibly annoyed by the question.

Will he ever return?

Still, one question managed to cut through – the one many fans have quietly been asking. Could there ever be a return?

“No, not really. I’ve never had that thought because I stopped exactly as I wanted to.

“I closed the book; even if I were to think about going back, though it’s too late now, I always felt it couldn’t have ended any better.

“Everything that came after would have been worse. Now I have other motivations in my life and other projects.

“That chapter ended well for me, and I was able to leave happy, without the feeling that anything could have been done better. I was happy, and that’s that.”

There was no ambiguity in that answer. If anything, it felt like closure – not just for him, but for anyone still holding onto the idea of a comeback.

And yet, even in shutting the door, Kroos left behind a line that says plenty about the present state of Real Madrid.

Without being asked directly, he turned attention towards Federico Valverde, the man who inherited his iconic number 8 shirt.
