Real Madrid midfield target closer to renewal as club fail to make decisive move – report
One of the main objectives for Real Madrid heading into the summer transfer window is reinforcing the central midfield position.
The Merengues opted not to sign replacements for both Toni Kroos and Luka Modric and have suffered as a result, with the current options in the squad failing to step up and meet the expectations.
Therefore, the idea is to sign a new midfielder who can dictate the tempo from the centre and provide greater control.
In that regard, Manchester City heavyweight Rodri had emerged as a key target for Los Blancos, as his contract stands to expire in 2027.
However, now, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, Rodri is now closer to renewing his contract with Manchester City than leaving the club in the summer.
The specific midfield target for renewal has not been disclosed in the report.

As per the report, Real Madrid have not taken any official steps thus far towards the signing of the Spanish international despite holding strong interest in him.
Manchester City, on the other hand, have been pushing to renew his contract for some time now.
According to Moretto, the Premier League heavyweights have been in talks with the midfielder’s camp over a new deal for weeks now. They are now ready to accelerate the negotiations in order to secure his future at the earliest possible.
This, coupled with a lack of decisive move from Real Madrid, have now brought Rodri closer to renewing his contract than leaving the club in the summer. A decision from the Spanish midfield ace is imminent.
If they miss out on his signing, it will be interesting to see who Real Madrid try to sign to reinforce the midfield unit before next season.
