Real Madrid transform Santiago Bernabeu into tennis arena for Madrid Open
Real Madrid are once again pushing the boundaries of innovation, this time away from football.
According to a report from AS, the iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is being transformed into a unique training venue for the upcoming Madrid Open, with a clay tennis court currently under construction inside the stadium.
The ambitious project began immediately after Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 victory over Alaves, with work crews moving to convert part of the pitch into a professional clay surface.
The transformation is already well underway, with efforts continuing around the clock to ensure everything is ready in time for the tournament’s stars.
This initiative is expected to create a truly unforgettable experience for some of the biggest names in tennis.
For the first time, players competing in the Madrid Open will have the opportunity to train inside one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world.
As per the outlet, from Thursday onwards, selected players who request access will be able to step onto the specially prepared clay court and train in a setting rarely seen in professional tennis.
With Real Madrid scheduled to play their next three fixtures, against Real Betis, Espanyol, and FC Barcelona, away from home, the stadium is free for several days.
This window has allowed organisers to carry out the installation without disrupting the club’s football calendar, as the Madrid open up run until May 3.
As for Real Madrid, they will not return to the Bernabeu until May 15, when they are set to host Real Oviedo.
By then, the temporary clay court will have served its purpose, providing tennis stars with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train in a venue steeped in sporting history.
