âReally concerningâ â Arne Slot under serious pressure as Liverpoolâs struggles continue
Arne Slotâs position at Liverpool came under sharper scrutiny during Anfield Indexâs Media Matters, as Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed not only the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but also the way Slot has handled questions around Liverpoolâs performances. The concern was clear, Liverpoolâs football has been poor, the Anfield crowd has grown restless and Slotâs recent answers have not eased the mood.
Davis referenced Slotâs response after the Chelsea game, when James Pearce asked about Liverpoolâs passive start. Davis said it was âa fair questionâ and described Slotâs reply as âa sarcastic responseâ, quoting the managerâs line: âOr do you think I just tell them to do that?â
For Lynch, that answer was a problem in itself. âI thought that answer was really concerning, to be honest,â he said. âReally concerning.â
Lynchâs issue was that Slotâs answer created two awkward possibilities, neither of which reflected well on him. He said Slot either âdidnât think that Liverpool had retreated into a mid-block in that first halfâ, meaning he âdidnât see itâ, or he wanted to âdetach himself from it and disown it as a tactical approach because it clearly didnât work.â
The alternative was just as worrying. Lynch added that Slot could have been suggesting he had told the players to push and they had ignored him. âThe players arenât listening to him when heâs telling them to press,â Lynch said, before concluding: âNeither of them reflect well. Both reflect really poorly on Slot.â
That is where the pressure on Arne Slot becomes more than results. Liverpoolâs performances are being questioned, but so too are the explanations.
Lynch also connected the answers to Slotâs wider demeanour. When Davis asked how much Saturday might affect the thinking of Liverpool decision-makers, Lynch said: âHeâs getting touchy. Heâs not liking the questions heâs facing.â

That matters because Liverpoolâs struggles are no longer confined to the pitch. The interviews are becoming part of the story. Slotâs responses are being read as signs of frustration, pressure and perhaps uncertainty over how to turn the situation around.
Lynch asked directly: âDoes he feel that he can turn it around? Iâm not so sure.â

The discussion also touched on Slotâs embargoed comments, with Davis quoting the manager as saying: âI wish I was able to say what I feel at this moment, but I canât.â
Lynch said he believed that section was âa little bit feistyâ and added: âI think he is getting a bit frustrated.â But he also stressed that frustration does not remove accountability, saying: âHe can be as frustrated as he wants, but people are seeing whatâs being served up.â
That was the central point. Liverpool fans, journalists and players are all reacting to what they can see. The football has been passive, the crowd has turned restless and Slotâs answers are not calming the situation.
As Lynch put it, the questions being asked are fair because people are entitled to âpoint out that this is not going particularly well for him.â For Arne Slot, the pressure is now coming from performances, from Anfield and from his own words.
