MANSFIELD â Madison Henkelâs long jump record in the Mehock Relays lasted all of two years. Thanks to her.
The Shelby senior rewrote the record book on an otherwise far from picture-perfect Saturday at Mehock Field, breaking her own meet record on her second jump and again on her third with a pair of leaps over 19 feet.
The reigning state indoor and outdoor champ had two 19-footers in her career before this 94th running of the Relays, one of them earlier this year at the Nike Indoor Nationals in NYC. By the end of Saturdayâs competition â despite the lousy elements â she had matched that total.
After fouling on her first attempt in the rain-soaked, wind-swept meet, she uncorked a jump of 19-1 and then the winning leap of 19-5.5 right after that to reset her school record and become a three-time Mehock champ.
No one could have forecast such a performance, given the gloomy weather.
âI certainly hope at some point I can hit 20 feet,â Henkel said. âThe state meet record is 19-11, so if I can hit 20 feet, thatâs been my high school goal forever. Hopefully, I can get there. Everythingâs got to be lined up ⊠my steps. My muscles have to be feeling good. If I do the right prep work, I think I can reach it.â
One of the reasons Henkel has committed to Coastal Carolina, where she will major in health sciences, is because of the warm weather. Saturdayâs conditions were practically the polar opposite.
Still, some may have thought a strong tailwind would work to her advantage. She didnât see it that way.
Shelby's Madison Henkel competed at the 94th Mehock Relays on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
âWhen thereâs a strong tailwind, it can mess up your steps, so I was waiting for it to calm down a little bit,â she said. âMy first jump was a foul, so I had to move my steps back and wait for the wind to go away.â
Henkel first set the Mehock record in 2024 as a sophomore, jumping 18-9, breaking a mark that had stood for 13 years. (The Mehock became a full-blown co-ed meet in 2005). Last year she repeated with a slightly lesser mark of 18-7.5 before making sure this yearâs Mehock would be the most memorable yet.
Because of some hamstring issues this was just the second time she had jumped outdoors this spring.
âThis is extremely encouraging,â Henkel said. âBeing out with an injury is kind of discouraging, so coming back and getting such a huge PR is a great confidence boost.
âIâve definitely got a target on my back (as a reigning state champ), so itâs only motivating to me. I have high standards, so I have to push myself every day.â
Fellow Shelby senior Princess Timko won the 100 in 12.25 and joined Henkel, Ashley Montgomery and Karlie Walp to win the 4x100 relay in 49.87, but the defending team champion Whippets had to settle for fifth in the 17-team standings this year behind Freont Ross (106), Ashland (100.5), Lexington (92) and Clear Fork (83.5).
Shelby's Princess Timko competed at the 94th Mehock Relays on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Ross swept the team crowns, dethroing two-time defending champion Lexington by a 118.5-111 margin. Clear Fork (86.5), Ashland (86.5) and Shelby (70) and Sandusky (56) rounded out the top five.
Lex did not load up its lineup Saturday or two days earlier when it swept the boys and girls titles at the Ontario Invitational. Latrell Hughes, who joined Henkel as a reigning state indoor and outdoor champ in the Mehock field, only ran two events in the Relays, winning both â his specialty, the 800 (1:53.24) and the 4x4 relay, which he anchored.
Even though Lex didnât load up, that takes nothing away from Rossâ outstanding performance all-around.â
On the boys side, the Little Giants finished one-two in the 100 behind Stephen Reiter (10.78) and Tyress Brown (10.83), with Clear Fork junior Nash Evans also cracking 11 seconds at 10.96.
The boys also had a double winner in Mason England, champ in the 110 hurdles (13.8) and high jump (6-2), while Kylie Kidd had an especially noteworthy performance for Fremontâs first place girls, clearing 5-6 to win the high jump.
Clear Fork junior Taylor Bly was a triple winner Saturday, while Crestview senior Liam Kuhn became a three-time champ in the pole vault.
Bly was on two winning relays last year, but she had a truly break-out performance this time around, winning the 200 (26.26) and the 400 (59.2) before finishing the meet by anchoring the first place 4x400 relay (4:10.3).
âI donât think the rain scared us,â Bly said. âIâve been running for three years. As long as thereâs no (lightning), I think weâre fine. You just have to push through it. I donât care what weather weâre running in. Iâll run in it and love it anyway.â
Bly was pushed in the 400 by teammate and runner-up Katie Beck, the freshman daughter of Eric Beck, a former Mehock competitor as a short sprinter and long-jumper for Bucyrus. He joked that he coaches the 400 better than he ran it, when he used it as conditioning for the 100 and 200.
Katie Beck also joined Bly, Quinn Stover and Eliana Pelky on the 4x4.
âI absolutely love running with Katie,â Bly said. âWeâve been waiting for this for two years. Just having someone else there to run a 400 with and a 4x4 with helps my confidence and her confidence.â
It was a big weekend for coach Beck and his family. His senior son, Eric, won the 400 in 51.14 and his niece, Kylie Kidd, won the 800 for Fremont Ross.
Speaking of successful families, hamstring issues hamstrung Liam Kuhn, a three-time All-Ohioan, early this spring, but heâs feeling closer to full strength after clearing 15-0 to win the vault Thursday at the Ontario Invite and winning another Mehock gold medal at 14-7. He stopped at that height rather than risk his already compromised health in the rain.
Kuhnâs sister, Zoe, a Crestview sophomore, was also an Ontario Invite and Mehock champ, clearing a school record 10-0 on Thursday and then matching that on Saturday. Their dad, Tim, is the long-time coach at Crestview.
Ashland's Sadie Walter competed in the 94th Mehock Relays on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
The girls 100 hurdles title is staying put.
Itâs staying with the Walter family in Ashland. Sadie Walter, a junior, won the race in 14.99, one year after her sister, Vivian, now competing for Ashland University, took top honors at Mehock.
Their mother, Gail, is head coach of the Arrow girls.
Proving she can thrive on an âoffâ track, Sadie also won the 300 hurdles in 47.85 and took fourth in the 100, moments after competing in the 100 hurdles.
âI knew I could push, I knew I could win,â said Sadie, who despite the adverse weather set PRs in the 100 hurdles prelims and finals and the 100 prelims. âItâs hard to have a positive mindset in the weather conditions weâre in, so I was trying to switch my mindset, knowing everyone else is dealing with the same thing.
âYou never want to use the weather as an excuse. Weâre in Ohio. This isnât anything crazy new to us. So you just make the most out of it. Expecting that same mindset out of people Iâm competing against is something Iâm thinking about.â
The running of the 94th Mehock Relays took place on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Bucyrus senior Karter Boggs held off the formidable Lex duo of Lincoln Rice and John Bartone to win the 1600 for the second year in a row, this time in 4:29.36.
When he won the first time in 2025, itâs believed he was the first Mehock champ from his school since former state 800 champ Sarah Henize in the early 2000s.
â(Repeating) was the goal,â said Boggs, whose father, Kevin, is Bucyrusâ head coach. âI wanted to go under 4:20 (his school record is 4:25), but the weather conducive to that at all. Between the rain and wind, itâs just survive and win.â
Boggs, who also finished fourth in the 800, is a two-time All-Ohion in cross county and indoor track. He also runs the 3200, which makes sense given his background in XC, but he prefers the 1600 when running in circles.
âI like the aggressiveness of the mile,â he said. âI like getting out real hard and taking the kicks away from kickers. Anymore, itâs like (a sprint) to me, especially the (800).â
The Tiffin University commit just missed making the state podium in Division III last spring. With Bucyrus dropping to DV with division expansion, he would seem to be a shoo-in for a medal this season.
âComing in (to this meet), I think I was top three in the state,â Boggs said. âIt should be fun. (A state medal) is the goal.â
