May 9—FLORENCE — A record-setting season for the Lindsay Lane baseball team came to an early end Friday night.

The Class 2A, No. 1 Lions fell to Mars Hill 11-6 in Game 3 of the state quarterfinals. The Lions finished with a 33-8 record, setting a school record for wins after eclipsing the previous record of 29.

"It was a record-breaking year for us, and we didn't even lose a game for like six weeks," said Lindsay Lane head coach Charles Morrison. "That's something to hang your hat on and be really proud of."

Morrison said the loss was tough but decided to take a positive spin on it.

"We're a young team with a lot coming back, and I think there's a lot of excitement for the future," he said.

Mars Hill took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Friday's game but Lindsay Lane responded quickly, scoring four runs in the second to go in front 4-2.

That lead would hold until the fourth inning, when Mars Hill scored three runs to go ahead 5-4 and then added another five in the fifth to push it to 10-4.

"They're a really good hitting team, and they did a good job of staying balanced," Morrison said. "I thought our starter did a good job of mixing his pitches in, and so I don't think it was much of what we were throwing. They just hit really well today."

Grayson Miller led the Lions with three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Bryson McMullin added two hits, and Lincoln Conn had a hit and an RBI.

Luke Fowler led Mars Hill with two hits and three RBIs.

Lindsay Lane loses just two seniors and returns eight of the nine players who started Friday. While topping 33 wins may be hard, Morrison said this season could be just the start of something bigger.

"Thirty-three wins is hard to accomplish, but our biggest goal is to bring home a blue map," Morrison said, referring to the state championship trophy emblazoned with a blue map of Alabama. "We're going to get back to work and hopefully be in the position next year to achieve that goal."
