The Boston Red Sox selected Matt Lloyd in the Rule 5 Draft in December and just activated him from the injured list.
The Red Sox got Lloyd in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft and started him in Worcester. He played just three games before going on the injured list. On Wednesday, the WooSox activated him from the injured list, and he could actually be a candidate to be called up and help the Red Sox.
He hit .271 with an .804 OPS in the minor leagues last season. He was 3-for-10 to start this season in Triple-A. The 30-year-old has experience at first base, third base and in the outfield. The Red Sox have yet to see Caleb Durbin produce offensively, so perhaps Lloyd could be an option.
Durbin, Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are the Red Sox's options in the hot corner right now. All three are hitting below .230, and it may be worth giving Lloyd an opportunity. It would be hard for him to produce less than the current options.
The lefty has long been awaiting an opportunity to play in the big leagues, and the Red Sox could finally give it to him. They clearly like something about his game, seeing as they selected him in the Rule 5 Draft. Now that he is healthy again, it makes sense to call him up. The offense needs answers, and it seems like it's time to try something new.
Matt Lloyd is a Rule 5 draft pick activated by the Red Sox, and he could bolster the team's offense after recovering from injury.
The Rule 5 Draft allows MLB teams to select unprotected players from other teams, requiring them to keep the selected players on their active roster for the entire season.
Before his injury, Matt Lloyd played only three games with the Worcester Red Sox (WooSox) after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft.
