Willson Contreras left the game against the Twins due to low back tightness after fielding a ground ball. Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated that the injury may not be serious, and they will assess his condition the following morning.
MINNEAPOLIS — First baseman Willson Contreras’ back tightened up while he fielded a ground ball during the third inning of the Red Sox’ 6-0 loss to the Twins on Tuesday at Target Field.
Contreras was removed in the fifth inning due to low back tightness.
“We’ll see how he feels tomorrow morning,” manager Alex Cora said. “(Head athletic trainer) Brandon (Henry) feels like it’s nothing serious, but obviously we have to be careful. He’s so important to us and we got Thursday off, so we’ll see how he feels tomorrow. And we decide if he goes.”
Contreras went 0 for 1 with a strikeout and hit by pitch before Andruw Monasterio replaced him at first base to begin the bottom of the fifth inning.
Cora said it happened when Twins’ Kody Clemens grounded out to first base to end the third inning.
“It was a ground ball to him,” Cora said. “He kind of reached down and I saw it. I was like, ‘Eh, that didn’t look great.’ And then he felt it throughout the game. So we decided to take him out.”
The 33-year-old slugger is batting .298 with a .444 on-base percentage, .491 slugging percentage, .935 OPS, three home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs, 11 walks and 19 strikeouts in 17 games (72 plate appearances).
He has provided elite defense at first base so far, ranking in the 99th percentile in outs above average (3).
