BOSTON — Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez will face his former team Thursday when Boston hosts the Phillies at Fenway Park.
Suarez will make his first start since May 3, when he left a game against the Astros due to right hamstring tightness.
The Phillies and Red Sox will play a three-game series at Fenway Park on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Interim manager Chad Tracy announced the pitching plans for each game.
Brayan Bello will pitch after an opener on Tuesday. Sonny Gray will start Wednesday.
“Everything is good there (with Suarez) so he’s slated to throw on Thursday,” Tracy said after Boston’s 4-1 loss to the Rays on Sunday.
Bello allowed 26 earned runs in 25 ⅔ innings (9.12 ERA) across his first six starts. The Red Sox then decided to try something different May 5 at Detroit. They brought in Bello for the second inning after using as an opener in the first inning. Bello had his best game this season, allowing just one run in seven innings to earn the victory.
Ranger Suarez will start for the Red Sox against the Phillies on Thursday.

“We’ll have an opener in front of Bello. Don’t know who that’s going to be yet,” Tracy said. “We’ll talk about it after using the ‘pen today.”
Suarez’s start vs. Philly carries added significance given his history with the Phillies He spent 2018-2025 with the Phillies, posting a 3.38 ERA in 187 outings, including 119 starts. Philadelphia is the only other organization he has played for. He signed there as a 16-year-old on April 1, 2012.
Boston signed Suarez to a five-year, $130 million contract in free agency in January. He has a 2.77 ERA over seven starts. He has not allowed a run in four of his past five starts. He has held opponents to a .197 batting average this season.
