The Boston Red Sox were criticized for what they did during the offseason, and that criticism has come back to bite them in the early stages of the 2026 season.

Sitting at 5-5 in their last 10 and 6-9 overall on the year, the Red Sox just haven't been playing the type of baseball they were hoping for. They did come away with impressive series wins against the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals, but sitting in fourth place in the American League East, it's obvious that Boston was expected to be a lot better.

One of the issues that the Red Sox dealt with during the offseason was allowing Alex Bregman to walk to the Chicago Cubs.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic sees that as a major problem the Red Sox will have to deal with, both in the future and right now.

“The Red Sox need another bat and a team leader. They really miss third baseman Alex Bregman, who signed with the Cubs in the offseason, and they really needed to pivot to Bo Bichette before he signed with the Mets.

“I think the Red Sox should be working hard at improving third base to free up Caleb Durbin to be a super-utility player. Yes, they need another bat if they want to make the playoffs.”

It's almost crazy to say that the Red Sox have to go out and add another bat to even make the postseason at this point, but history isn't exactly on their side if we're being honest.

The Red Sox have had a very slow start to the campaign, and if they don't fix this lineup problem soon, one game could be the reason they don't make the playoffs in the American League, especially the American League East.

It was evident that Bregman was going to be missed, and it was questionable when they didn't bring him back a few months ago. However, that's a decision they made, and now they have to live with it.
