BOSTON — The Red Sox will play at Fenway Park for the first time in the post-Alex Cora era Friday night — and will do so with a touted pitching prospect making his major league debut on the mound.
Left-hander Jake Bennett will start for the Red Sox in place of the injured Garrett Crochet, making his big league debut after just five career starts at Triple-A. The Oklahoma product, who was acquired from Washington for fellow pitching prospect Luis Perales over the winter, has dominated for Worcester, logging an 0.86 ERA and recording 16 strikeouts in 21 innings.
Bennett will be the sixth Red Sox pitcher to make his debut so far this season. He was officially called up Friday, taking the roster spot of utility man Nate Eaton, who was optioned back to Triple-A on Thursday.
After losing two in a row in Toronto to finish off a divisional road trip, the Red Sox will keep things the same in their lineup in Tracy’s home debut. Jarren Duran is leading off for the fourth time in five games with Roman Anthony hitting third. Carlos Narváez is catching Bennett and Masataka Yoshida is the odd man out in the outfield/designated hitter mix.
Boston’s lineup will face righty Mike Burrows, who held Boston to two runs and struck out six batters in five innings in on April 1. swept the Red Sox in the first of two series between the clubs this year.
