The Red Sox are finalizing their pitching rotation with Brayan Bello and rookie lefties Connelly Early and Payton Tolle. Sonny Gray's potential return from the injured list adds to the uncertainty as the team prepares for a road trip to Detroit.

BOSTON — The Red Sox will have Connelly Early (Saturday) and Ranger Suárez (Sunday) start against the Astros over the weekend before going back on the road. After that, things remain in flux.
Boston has still not set its rotation for next week, starting with a quick three-game road trip to Detroit, as it juggles Sonny Gray’s potential return from the injured list, Brayan Bello’s struggles and the right amount of rest for rookies like Early, Payton Tolle and, potentially, Jake Bennett. Those conversations are underway one day after Gray — on the IL since April 21 with a minor hamstring strain — felt good in a three-inning live batting practice session at Fenway Park.
“No clarity yet,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “I can tell you Sonny felt good coming in today, so we started to discuss and figure out what we’re gonna do with the rotation there.”
Tolle is next in line after Suárez but the Red Sox plan to be careful with his between-starts routine after he tired during his outing Tuesday and logged just 4 ⅔ innings against the Blue Jays on regular (four days). The Red Sox were off Thursday, so Tolle would pitch Monday on an extra day of rest. That is still an option.
“There’s avenues on that we’ll look at,” Tracy said. “That would be a five-day. Do we want to move that around? We haven’t gotten there yet on what we want to do.”
On Friday, Tracy said he was “planning” on having Bello make his next start and the righty would be in line for Tuesday. Bello, though, has a 9.12 ERA through his first six starts of the season and has allowed 12 earned runs and 19 hits in seven innings in his last two outings. .
The Red Sox will start Connelly Early and Ranger Suárez against the Astros, but their rotation for next week remains undecided.
Sonny Gray's potential return from the injured list is a key factor as the team discusses its rotation, especially after he felt good in a recent practice session.
The Red Sox are considering rookies Connelly Early, Payton Tolle, and potentially Jake Bennett for their pitching rotation.
Brayan Bello has been struggling, which is contributing to the Red Sox's uncertainty in finalizing their pitching rotation.

“I saw 2⅔ (innings) of a really good outing where he looked good,” Tracy said. “I talked to him mainly about that there was a lapse there when they started to get some traffic. For the first eight outs of that game, he was going pretty good. The velocity was up and we saw a glimpse of what that could look like. We’re looking to put that together with him to get him to be able to sustain that and give us the innings we know we can.”
For Wednesday’s series finale in Detroit, the Red Sox could choose to start Gray (on regular rest after his live BP) or Bennett, who is notably still on the major league roster a day after his strong debut. Instead of optioning Bennett back to Triple-A ahead of Gray’s expected return (and adding an extra relief arm), the Red Sox are keeping their options open — for now. With the Red Sox in a stretch of 10 games in 10 days, there’s also the possibility of a six-man rotation that includes both Gray and Bennett the next time through — or a spot starter added to the mix to give everyone an extra day.
Bennett took the rotation spot of ace Garrett Crochet, who was placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation Wednesday and is currently shut down from throwing for what the Red Sox hope is a short time.
