The Boston Red Sox have had it tough this season. While their lucky Green jerseys helped them get a win on Friday night over the Detroit Tigers, the Red Sox still reside at a rough 8-11 on the year.
Things have not gone too well for Boston this season, and those struggles have come from the starting rotation and the lineup. But the more pressing issue might be their new additions to go with the lackluster performances from star players as well.
Overall, as Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report put it, this season has been a big disappointment so far. Miller gave the Red Sox an "F" grade from their early-season results, and it's hard to argue with the letter grade with how tough this year has been.
"Arguably the biggest disappointment in all of baseball thus far, Boston loaded up on starting pitching this offseason, but has yet to reap any benefit from doing so," Miller writes.
There is a lot wrong with this Red Sox team beyond the simple 8-11 record. The biggest issue might be the starting rotation.
Garrett Crochet has a 7.58 ERA on the season and has had some concerning starts, including a 10-run outing against the Minnesota Twins.
Sonny Gray has a 4.43 ERA, while , thanks to an eight-inning shutout on Friday night, lowered his ERA to 3.22. But Bryan Bello has a 6.14 ERA, and the pitching staff overall has a collective 4.27 ERA.

Then, when it comes to the offense, Roman Anthony's .686 OPS has been a disappointment, while Marcelo Mayer's .553, Trevor Story's .544, Jaren Duran's .520, Carlos Narvaez's .409, and Caleb Durbin's .421 OPS are all concerning marks.
The offense isn't as good as it should be, with multiple starters who should be much better all struggling to begin the season. If it weren't for Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu, the Red Sox might be in a very concerning spot offensively this season.
Overall, it's hard to call this a start to the year as anything other than a disappointment. While the New York Mets or the Philadelphia Phillies might be bigger disappointments overall, it's been an "F" grade worthy beginning to the 2026 season for the Red Sox.
