BOSTON — Outfielder Roman Anthony was out on the Fenway Park field Tuesday wearing a brace — and still not participating in baseball activities more than a week after suffering a wrist sprain in Detroit. It seems he’s unlikely to return from the injured list when he’s eligible Friday, but the Red Sox still don’t believe he’s facing a lengthy absence.
“Roman’s improving,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “Just small, incremental improvements and we’ll just keep going until we get to the point where we feel like we’re in a good spot.”
Anthony injured the top of his hand on a swing against the Tigers last Monday and was placed on the 10-day IL on Thursday, when the Red Sox returned home. At that point, Boston hoped he’d be ready to come back to the lineup after his 10-day period expired. Now, though, it’s unclear if Anthony will travel with the team when it leaves for Atlanta on Thursday night.
Progress for Anthony means swinging a bat — something he hasn’t done in the last week.
“It’s mostly strengthening,” said Tracy. “Eventually, we’ll get to strong gripping. That’s the biggest thing for him: when do we get to feel like the grip strength is there? When we’re in there, we’re in a better spot.”

There remains a feeling that Anthony could turn a corner fast.
“It’s hard to say because it’s something that if it improves quickly, he hasn’t been out that long and maybe he would feel comfortable with that,” Tracy said. “The best answer is that we’ve just got to see when this grip strength gets there.”
OTHER UPDATES:
** Lefty Garrett Crochet (left shoulder inflammation) played catch at 120 feet on Sunday at Fenway and also tossed 10 throws of catch (not at full strength) off the mound. He was out playing long toss again Tuesday in the outfield before the game.
The Red Sox will need to see Crochet throw multiple times off a mound — and likely face hitters — before he returns to the rotation. At this point, he continues to strengthen his fatigued throwing shoulder and build arm strength.
“We continue to progress well there,” Tracy said.
** Starters Kutter Crawford (flexor irritation) and Patrick Sandoval (biceps tightness) are both with the team and building back up after having April rehab stints halted due to setbacks.
Crawford, who last pitched in a game on April 11 at Triple-A, is playing catch at 90 feet and “basically right now just increasing volume and throwing as he goes,” Tracy said. Sandoval is a step ahead while also throwing at 90 feet.
“Hopefully off the mound by the end of this week,” Tracy said. “We’ll see how it goes in the early part of the week.”
** Lefty Danny Coulombe (cervical spasms in neck) can be activated as soon as Sunday in Atlanta and that seems to be in play if he feels better in the coming days.
“He threw the other day and I think he’s scheduled to throw another (bullpen) today,” said Tracy. “He’s doing better but he still does have some residual stiffness in his neck. We’ll get him through another side (session) and evaluate after that and see what we’re gonna do.”
** Infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez (left shoulder surgery recovery) continues to take grounders before games and is slowly building up with baseball activities. He’s not eligible to return until June — and won’t be ready until at least then, anyway.
“Just incremental improvements,” Tracy said. “Not far enough along. He’s improving. There have definitely been positive signs here lately and it’s improving and getting better, but nothing crazy.”
*** Two injured players — first baseman Triston Casas and righty Johan Oviedo — are soon due for check-ups to see if they can resume baseball activities.
Casas is in Fort Myers rehabbing a rib injury he suffered while trying to come back from a torn patellar tendon in his knee.
“Triston is supposed to see (the doctor) sometime later this week,” said Tracy. “I think he’s going to see the doctor to re-eval what’s going on and we’ll go from there.”
Oviedo suffered a flexor strain in his throwing arm during the first week of the season and at that point, was shut down from throwing for a six-week period that will soon come to an end.
“Next week, a re-eval with the doctor on him to see where he’s at as far as healing is concerned,” Tracy said.
