Boston began the season with elevated expectations after making the playoffs, but Alex Cora's squad is tied for last in the American League East at 7-11. While the Red Sox haven't played up to their standards, they're gradually turning a corner.
The Athletic's Chad Jennings grouped the Red Sox among MLB's biggest "underachievers" to begin the season. Only three teams have a larger difference between their projected preseason winning percentage and current percentage.
However, Jennings noted that the Red Sox had the widest gap before Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. The 7-12 New York Mets now hold the dubious distinction.
"The Mets have now lost eight in a row while the Red Sox have won five of eight," Jennings wrote. "Still not great for the Red Sox, but they’re at least inching in the right direction, while the Mets have been free falling from a winning record in early April to last place in the division by the middle of the month."
The Boston Red Sox are labeled as underachievers due to their poor start, currently holding a 7-11 record despite high expectations after making the playoffs last season.

Boston's lineup has yet to provide much power, belting an American League-worst 12 home runs. Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras are off to fast starts, but no other regular starter (minimum 12 games) is slugging above .380.
