According to the Red Sox on X, to make room for Tolle on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned left-hander Eduardo Rivera to Triple-A. Rivera had his contract selected by the Red Sox on Wednesday and pitched in the Red Sox's 4-1 loss to the Yankees.
In his first big league outing, the 22-year-old went 3.1 innings, struck out three, walked none and allowed one hit. In his previous start in Triple-A, Rivera threw 5.2 innings and struck out nine.
Since he was optioned, Rivera will need to spend a minimum of 15 days down in the minor leagues before getting recalled. This puts him out of the running to be used if the Red Sox need another arm.
Gray should be back once his stint on the injured list is done, meaning Rivera may not be needed. However, the Red Sox's depth will help them throughout the season after a few injuries. Right-hander has dealt with right flexor irritation and left-hander should return soon after dealing with left biceps discomfort.
