The Boston Red Sox open a three-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.
With the Red Sox firing manager Alex Cora on April 25 and the Phillies following suit by letting go of Rob Thomson three days later, Boston and Philadelphia are being led by interim managers Chad Tracy and Don Mattingly, respectively.
Tuesday's matchup will see something that hasn't happened in MLB in 24 years.
"It’s a rare convergence of teams led by interim managers. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this will be the first time since 2002 that two teams have met within their first 45 games, both with a different manager than they had on Opening Day," MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan wrote. "It’s happened only four times previously in the Modern Era (since 1900), and unlike the Phillies and Red Sox, none of the clubs involved were coming off postseason berths the year prior."
Soon after Cora and Thomson were dismissed, it was reported that the former was heavily pursued by the Phillies for the vacancy.
Some expect Philadelphia to go after Cora again over the winter.
Both the Red Sox and Phillies have improved since firing their lead men, with the NL East club going 10-3 since getting rid of Thomson and Boston playing over .500 ball at 7-6 since Cora's exit.
