6. Marcelo Mayer put the Red Sox ahead 1-0 with a sharp single (101.3 mph off the bat) to center field with two outs in the fourth inning. He connected on a slider from Cease right down the middle of the plate.
7. Boston scored twice in the fifth with two outs. Cease hit Willson Contreras with a pitch with two outs. Durbin (who walked with one out) and Contreras each moved ahead one base on Cease’s pickoff attempt throwing error. Roman Anthony followed with an RBI infield single and Wilyer Abreu delivered an RBI double.
8. Caleb Durbin’s two-out RBI single in the seventh inning extended Boston’s lead to 4-0. Durbin blooped one into left field with the ball leaving his bat at just 64.9 mph.
9. Marcelo Mayer went 2 for 3 with a walk, one run and one RBI.
Before the game, Tracy was asked if Mayer — who has made all his starts this season against right-handed starters — might start to get some playing time vs. lefties. Tracy said, “I want to see Marcelo get some opportunities. I’m not saying that tonight if something comes up and there’s a favorable matchup that we wouldn’t do that. I’m not saying that Marcelo is going to start against Tarik Skubal every time. But if there’s opportunities that we feel like we can give him a little bit more of that, we may do that.”
10. Carlos Narváez’s 388-foot solo home run in the eighth inning made it 5-0 Boston.
11. The Red Sox and Blue Jays will play the second game of their series Tuesday at 7:07 p.m. Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will start opposite Blue Jays rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage (2026 debut).
