The Boston Red Sox are reportedly bringing up one of their top prospects much sooner than anticipated.
On Tuesday, the Red Sox promoted left-handed pitching prospect Eduardo Rivera from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester, where he was expected to debut on Thursday.
However, there's already been a change of plans. Following Boston's 4-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday night, MassLive's Chris Cotillo reported that the Red Sox are already promoting Rivera to the Majors.
According to Boston sports reporter Ari Alexander, the team is optioning right-handed pitcher Jack Anderson to Triple-A to make room for Rivera.
According to MLB Pipeline, the 22-year-old southpaw ranks as the No. 26 overall prospect in the Red Sox organization and the club's No. 13 pitching prospect. However, MLB Pipeline didn't project him to reach the Majors until next year.

While he's never pitched above Double-A, Rivera faced Major League hitters while pitching for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. The towering lefty also dominated his first two starts at Double-A this year with a 0.90 ERA, a 1.67 FIP and a .167 BAA.
After accelerating Rivera's promotion, Boston presumably plans to use him against the Yankees this week, likely out of the bullpen. The Red Sox have a history of having their top prospects make their MLB debuts against New York, so they must be confident in Rivera to have him skip Triple-A and go straight to facing the Yankees' lineup.
