The right-hander began the season with a bang, amassing 17 strikeouts over 9 1/3 highly promising innings while allowing just four hits and two runs. Valera worked five scoreless frames on April 9, only the third time in his professional career he's lasted that long in a start.
This isn't the first injury for Valera, who sat out three months last season due to elbow soreness. The Red Sox will likely continue to exude ample caution with their hard-throwing teenage prospect, who joins Payton Tolle, Kyson Witherspoon, and Anthony Eyanson among the organization's tantalizing young pitchers.
