Coming off back-to-back wins, including an extra-innings walk-off against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, the Boston Red Sox will try to extend their winning streak at Fenway Park on Saturday.
That won't be easy, however, as the Tigers will have their ace and reigning AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal, on the bump.
After scoring just one run on four hits on Friday, the Red Sox may struggle to generate offense again on Saturday. Facing Skubal is hard enough, especially without several of the team's best hitters.
According to team beat writer Chris Cotillo, Masataka Yoshida, Jarren Duran, Carlos Narvaez and Marcelo Mayer are out of Boston's starting lineup in Game 2 of the series. In their places are Andrew Monasterio, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
The lineup is deemed surprising due to unexpected player choices and positioning ahead of a game against a strong opponent.
The starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers is Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young winner.
The Red Sox are looking to build momentum after back-to-back wins, which is crucial for their performance in the ongoing season.

Skubal's a lefty, so it makes sense that Alex Cora wants as many right-handed bats as possible against him. Duran, Mayer and Yoshida all hit left-handed, which explains why they're sitting.
Still, it's somewhat surprising that Yoshida's on the bench again after delivering the game-winning hit on Friday. He's arguably the team's hottest hitter right now, but he was not rewarded with a start on Saturday.
Moving Trevory Story to DH and displacing Duran so Monasterio can play shortstop also appears questionable. Duran is an All-Star and one of the team's best players, while Monasterio is a utility player.
In short, the Red Sox are facing arguably the best pitcher in baseball without their best lineup.
Cora will have plenty of bench options once Skubal comes out of the game, but by then it may already be too late.
