Red Sox roster move: Triston Casas placed on 60-day IL to make room for rookie lefty

The Red Sox made some roster moves ahead of their game against the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Boston selected Eduardo Rivera to its roster and optioned Jack Anderson, as sources told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo late Tuesday. In order to make room for Rivera on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox placed Triston Casas on the 60-day injured list in a paper move that will not impact his timeline to return.

Casas came into spring training recovering from a serious knee injury suffered last May and began the season on the 10-day injured list.

The strength of Casas’ knee continued to improve but he paused his progression during the first week of April when he felt pain on his left side. He tried to resume swinging by hitting off a tee earlier this month but felt enough discomfort to shut things down once again. That led to further tests as he was diagnosed with an abdominal strain.

Casas has been shut down from baseball activities and it’s unclear when he’ll be able to resume or when he’ll make his season debut. He’s not in play to join the Red Sox at any time in May, so his retroactive 60-day IL stint doesn’t change much.
