DETROIT â The Red Sox will welcome a key member of their rotation back Wednesday â and to do so, they sent down a pitcher who made his major league debut late in Tuesdayâs win.
Boston activated righty Sonny Gray off the 15-day injured list and heâll pitch Wednesdayâs series finale against the Tigers. Lefty Alec Gamboa was optioned to Triple-A Worcester after two days in the majors.
For Gray, the return to the rotation comes after the minimum 15 days on the IL. The 36-year-old suffered a minor hamstring strain during his Patriots Day start against the Tigers on April 20 and left in the third inning. He was placed on the IL the next day. The injury improved over the course of that week and Gray threw a three-inning simulated game at Fenway Park on Friday. He will return without having made a rehab appearance.
Gray has logged a 4.30 ERA in five starts this year. He had allowed an earned run and three hits to Detroit before leaving his last outing.
Gamboa, a 29-year-old former Dodgers farmhand who spent part of last season in Korea, joined the Red Sox on Monday when . Gamboa pitched the ninth inning in Bostonâs 10-3 win and threw 14 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning that includes two strikeouts ( and Hao-Yu Lee).
