The Red Sox placed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day injured list due to neck spasms and called up Alec Gamboa for his first MLB stint. Patrick Sandoval was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room on the roster.
DETROIT — Ahead of their series opener against the Tigers on Monday, the Red Sox made a series of roster moves and added a new arm to their pitching staff.
Boston placed left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day injured list with cervical (neck) spasms and selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Alec Gamboa. The Red Sox cleared a 40-man roster spot for Gamboa with a paper move, shifting injured lefty Patrick Sandoval to the 60-day injured list.
Coulombe, who has a 5.63 ERA, has appeared in 12 games so far this season. He first experienced the neck spasms Sunday when he woke up and the pain got to a point where an IL stint made sense a day later.
“Woke up yesterday and just had a spasm in my neck,” Coulombe said. “It just hasn’t gotten better. We just want to make sure we take care of it. You worry about mechanical changes when you’re dealing with stuff. It’s hard to pitch when you can’t see home plate. Hopefully, it’s just a quick thing.”
Coulombe thinks the neck issues may resolve themselves in a few days, but the Red Sox didn’t want to handicap their bullpen by having the 36-year-old unavailable for multiple days.
“It’s old age,” Coulombe joked. “When you sleep on a lot of different pillows, sometimes you can just tweak things.”
In Coulombe’s absence, Gamboa — who will be in the bullpen Monday night — will get his first chance at major league action. He could be a candidate to serve as an opener in front of righty Brayan Bello on Tuesday night against the Tigers, too.
“Just happy to be here,” Gamboa said. “It has been a long journey for sure. Excited to be here and compete.”
Gamboa, who was not on the 40-man roster, benefited from a clause in the minor league contract he signed in December. He had an assignment/opt-out clause that allowed him to seek interest from other clubs on May 1. After triggering that, Gamboa and his camp found a team that was interested in signing him to their big league roster. The Red Sox exercised their right to protect Gamboa by adding him themselves. .

Gamboa is a 29-year-old former Dodgers prospect who has never pitched in the majors. He reached Triple-A in three consecutive seasons before signing in Korea last year and recording a 3.58 ERA with 117 strikeouts in 108 innings for Lotte. In December, the Red Sox signed him to a minor league contract with a spring training invite.
Gamboa was hurt for most of spring training and had the start to his regular season delayed. In three starts for the WooSox, he has allowed nine earned runs in 13 innings (6.23 ERA) while posting a 15-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His last outing was Thursday when he struck out six batters and allowed two runs in 5 ⅔ innings for the WooSox in Rochester.
“Good arm,” said interim manager Chad Tracy, who had Gamboa in Worcester before taking Alex Cora’s place. “You’ll see a rock-back, way-over-the-top delivery, 93-95 (mph), mid-nineties, good lively fastball. And a breaking ball and changeup. He’s got good stuff. The outings he had with us, he was in and around the zone a good bit. I know his last one in Rochester was pretty good.”
With Boston’s bullpen taxed after starters Connelly Early (Saturday) and Ranger Suárez (Sunday) each went four innings over the weekend against Houston, the Red Sox believe Gamboa can give them length in the coming days. His stay with the big league club could be short with Sonny Gray potentially being activated to pitch Wednesday against the Tigers.
“We have to see what happens with Ranger,” Tracy said. “Obviously, when Sonny comes back, we still have to make a move. We’ll take the next couple days to assess and see where he’s at.”
Veteran Tommy Kahnle, who owns a 2.89 ERA in eight appearances for Worcester so far, had a similar contractual clause as Gamboa but is expected to remain with the WooSox after not receiving interest elsewhere, according to sources. Sandoval is shut down from throwing after experiencing biceps tightness in his second rehab outing with the WooSox on April 14. He wasn’t going to be ready to pitch this month — and now can’t as a member of the 60-day IL.
