The Boston Red Sox went into this season deciding to double down on pitching and defense to win games. While it’s been a little chaotic for them offensively, their pitching really has come through, but not from the usual suspects.
Boston planned on Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, and Sonny Gray being the workhorses of the rotation as the veterans, but their young arms are really pulling their weight. Specifically, the Sox’ former top two lefty pitching prospects, Connelly Early and Payton Tolle.

Early has become the undisputed No. 5 pitcher in the rotation. He’s only had one bad game so far, and has posted a 3-2 record, a 3.16 ERA, 39 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.1219 over 42 innings pitched.
Early also leads the Sox in multiple categories. He’s the top man in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts. If Boston can have him finishing off the rotation for the foreseeable future, their pitching could be set for a while.
Payton Tolle

Last season, Tolle had one good start and then batted around like crazy. However, this season he’s been showing why he was Boston’s No. 1 prospect after Roman Anthony graduated.
So far, he’s posted a 1-1 record, a 2.04 ERA, 23 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.736 over 17 innings pitched. Tolle is making a good case for staying in the rotation, and might actually put Brayan Bello out of a job once Crochet returns.

So, with Crochet and Suarez locked up on long-term deals, and Early and Tolle having years of team control, the Sox will have four starters that can shut down games. Moreover, with how cheap Early and Tolle will be, the Sox can afford to use the money they save to upgrade other places.
The only semi-caveat to this core is the fact all four are lefties. However, if Early, Suarez and Tolle can keep up what they’re doing, and Crochet returns to his normal Cy Young candidate self, the Sox could still be scary to face no matter what.
